Hoy dedicamos la primera clase de la mañana a observar clases; por parejas, nos dirigimos a distintas clases de la escuela y observamos las clases fijándonos en una serie de cuestiones que nos habían indicado previamente. Sabela y yo observamos la clase de Michael en la sala Leyburn.

Comprobamos de primera mano que es bastante distinto enseñar a nuestro alumnado la asignatura de inglés como idioma extranjero a enseñar a alumnado de distintas nacionalidades (especialmente a árabes o asiáticos porque les faltan referentes culturales o de vocabulario).

La clase con Rosie, de 11:30 a 13:00 fue de aprendizaje de vocabulario: `idioms´y `phrasal verbs´.

Idioms Lesson Plan:

• Level: Intermediate / Int. +
• Start by eliciting what an idiom is (can you think of an idiom in Spanish ( for lower level students)  or in English?).

       - Timed conditions: 3 minutes

       - You can give a theme (e.g.: animals, food...)

• Try to find the equivalent of the idiom in English - if they do it in Spanish first

     OR

•  Start with a worksheet for the students to complete. In this case, pre-teach new vocabulary
• Give examples of situations
• Error correction

New idioms for me today:

- to be on cloud 9 / to be over the moon  (= estar en el séptimo cielo) 

- to be in one´s prime (= en la flor de la vida)

- You´re away with the fairies = You´re spacing out

- He is a snake in the grass = you cannot trust him

- She is like a bear with a sore head = she is grumpy

- to have butter fingers = to be clumsy

- to have green fingers = to be good at gardening

- to get cold feet= to be reluctant (e.g. Some people get cold feet before they marry)

- butter doesn´t melt in your mouth (= you look innocent , but it has a negative meaning: you might not be as you seem)

- the best thing since sliced bread

- you are the bees´knees= you are the shit (rude) = you are the dog´s bollocks (vulgar)

Vocabulario que aprendimos hoy:

- bugger all  (rude) = nothing (e.g., they pay him bugger all)

- sour grapes= bitter, resentful ( it is hard to put in a sentence; it is a just an expression. E.g., " a case of sour grapes").

La comida de la escuela está buena pero las raciones son escasas y el espacio ( the common room) también

Después de comer, unas cuantas nos fuimos a Haworth, a visitar Brontë Patronage Museum, turismo literario. 

Llegar a Haworth desde Harrogate en transporte público no es fácil así que nos fuimos en taxi.

Charlotte Brontë publicó Jane Eyre en 1847, Emily Brontë publicó Wuthering Heights en 1847 y Anne Brontë publicó The Tenant of Wildfell Hall  en 1848. Publicaron bajo el pseudónimo de "The Bell Brothers", Currer, Ellis y Acton Bell.

Esta visita de hoy es un ejemplo, según Anna, de `pathetic fallacy´ (= when the weather in the story reflects the mood of the characters). El tiempo - lluvioso y (muy) fresco- es el que imaginamos como ambiente en las novelas de las Brontë y, así mismo, el tiempo que, imaginamos, tenían en el día a día. También podemos aplicar a nuestra visita a Haworth hoy otro adjetivo que aprendimos `it wasn´t heaving´(`heaving´= crowded place because of nice weather)
