Hoy acompañé a Niall al colegio

El `lollipop man´cortó el tráfico para que cruzásemos

Y éste es el colegio de Niall, Grove Road Community Primary School .

Todos los edificios de la zona son de finales del siglo XIX, como la casa en la que vivo ahora:

Primera clase de la mañana, "Integrated Skills and Sub Skills", de 9:30 a 11:00, con Anna

Aparte de todo lo que aprendimos con las actividades que hicimos en relación a este tema ( algunas del libro Just Right Intermediate, de Jeremy Harmer, Marshall Cavendish Education) , todas aprendimos algún vocabulario:

a bitty lesson" = a leson that doesn´t flow or connect
To be / feel loved up = to be in love ( especially in the first stages of the relationship)

Después del coffee-break, de 11:30 a 13:00, tuvimos la sesión "Adapting the Course Book" con Rosie.

Trabajamos con un par de unidades de Cutting Edge. Intermediate, de Pearson Longman y también aprendimos algún vocabulario:

to open a can of worms = to open Pandora´s box
sniff out (e.g. Students sniff it out when the teacher does not like what she is doing)

Después de comer (una deliciosa pero extremadamente escasa) ración de quiche, fuimos a un par de visitas en la ciudad con los guías de la escuela. Primero fuimos a Mercer Gallery. Llegamos justo a tiempo para escuchar a Sarah Whitton hablar sobre dos de sus obras: la primera, "Thirty Pieces Of Silver, The Man".

Sarah spoke about primitivism and the influence of ethnographic artefacts on artists like Picasso and herself. She explained how she used painting to express something seen with the inner eye, or the intellect. She stated she was fascinated by the traditional function of art across all cultures to express the heart of culture and religious beliefs - that is the reason why she uses symbols from the religious expressions of African sculptures and Bible stories, for instance. And most important of all, she seemed to be a very good person.

El segundo cuadro que nos explicó fue "Thirty Pieces Of Silver, Vanitas"

Her emphasis this time was on the transit in nature of possessions and the way how we value stuff. Can you see all these things in the painting: a Victorian money box, a skull, some coins, slave bangles, a Zulu doll with no arms...?

La segunda visita de la tarde fue a The Royal Pump Room Museum.

The Pump Room offered guests of the town an all weather facility where they could drink sulphur water which was pumped on site from a natural spring known as the Old Sulphur Well. The building also had a social element to it as it provided guests with a place to meet friends and get to know others.
